what are the symptoms of

Depression Here

Yoga is extremely beneficial for people who are going through emotional and mental turmoil. Yoga helps in reducing the impact of stress response. Itworks like any other relaxation techniques such as meditation and exercise.Andtoday, the 21st of June being marked asthe International Day of Yoga, let us look at how yoga aids in depression.

Taming the stress response

Yoga works to modulate the stress response system by priming the parasympathetic nervous system. And this decreases physiological arousal such as reducing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure and facilitating respiration. Yoga also promotes mindfulness (staying in the moment) which is extremely essential for managing depression.

Improved mood and functioning

Yoga works wonders in terms of improving mood. It is believed that yoga has the ability to fight depression by balancing the brain chemistry and stress hormones. Regular yoga helps in pulling us out of depression and rise above to joy.

Overcoming fears that cause depression

Yoga is considered to be the bestand natural way to overcome our deep rooted fears which in turn gives us a feeling of improvement. It calms the nervous system, teaches us to slow down our breathing and relax our bodies.

Heals the mind

Yoga helps in eliminating the emotional blocks that prevent us from leading a healthy life. It also restores body and mind harmony.Pranayam and meditation helps in soothing the mind.

Exercise as a miracle cure for depression

Studies have been conducted to check for the benefits of exercise and yoga on depression; and time and time again this miracle curehas proven its efficacy and lack of negative side effects. A study conducted at Duke University in the late 90s and early 2000s revealed that people suffering from depression who exercised regularly instead of taking medicines showed 95-100% improvement when compared to their non-exercising counterparts.

Researchers have noted that exercise balances serotonin and endorphin levels, it produces natural chemical compounds that support brain cell growth.Neuroscience researchers have also found that exercise increasesgalanin, a neurochemical that tames down the brain/body stress response. In other words, exercise can help the stressed as well as the depressed.

The youth of today who rely immensely on science as evidence should believe that yoga does help promote our mental health as it is backed up by research. It is high time we take the benefits of yoga on mental health seriously and take pledge to practise yoga regularly.
