Is Psychoanalysis & Reflective Therapy really for the intellectuals who want Self-Discovery?

20 Jan 2016

Mitesh was a shy writer. He was earning pretty decent but his heart belonged somewhere else, he did not know where? He came to me for self -discovery. In the first session, we discussed about his dreams and how he wanted to be a writer itself.

In couple of sessions, we explored more of why he wanted to be a writer? It became evident that his brother as a child told Mitesh that since he is a quiet person, he can become a good writer and thats where Mitesh started to believe it.

However when we further explored together, we found that he has a real passion for making a change in this world, particularly for elderly. Perhaps his quieter self came from reflection about how he could simplify other people's lives. That was the moment, Mitesh got in touch with his true self. Today Mitesh runs a home care business and that too one of the most successful in his city. He is surely a happier man, still quieter but now his work speaks for him :)

What is Psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis is a unique, intensive form of therapy that fosters personal development and liberation from unsatisfying or painful patterns of living.

The individual in analysis and the analyst work together in close collaboration; they pay careful attention to the interactions of personal and interpersonal experience, of past and present, of body and mind, of fantasy and reality. Such an in-depth exploration can set in motion a process of personal transformation.

Psychoanalysis (reflective therapy) taken up by People who excelled in their careers

Harry Porter's Writer, JK Rowling before achieving all that she did made regular psychoanalytic trips to a therapist. The process helped her discover the writer, the achiever in her!

Other famous people who have taken therapy for self-discovery or removing pain are Jim Carrey, Mike Wallace, Ellen De Generes, the list is endless!

What happens in therapy?

The decision to seek therapy is a very personal one and hence, surrounded by certain expectations and imaginations. While the popular notion is that we ‘talk’ endlessly, ideally sessions are shaped by the therapist and the client together.

The session can be a venting out space or a series of questions to explore yourself; it can be an hour of crying or a phase of complete silence. Perhaps, two therapy sessions are never the same in terms of their content and structure. Each one is a part of the larger process of bringing you closer to yourself and hence, it touches, develops and disturbs various layers in you. However, a particular distinction can be sought between:

Open-ended Sessions: Priya finds it more insightful to work on weekly appointments and sharing whatever is on her mind in an open-ended way. She starts the session by expressing how she is guilty for being late and we are able to take it back to the fact that she has always been an obedient child and cannot allow herself to make mistakes or be messy. This helps her realize her undue pressure onto herself, which is causing her so much frustration and sadness.

Structured Sessions: In structured sessions, such as chosen by Meeta, you develop a plan for each session beforehand. Since her problem was her anxiety, we decided to work on different levels such as fear of judgments, fear of abandonment and so on. She guided to practice particular skills and review certain types of interactions with targeted goals for improvement. Such as, she was asked to write a letter to her mother whom she has not spoken to for 2 yrs and bring it to the session.

Since the session is a fluid and dynamic space, it allows various shapes and turns. However, the session is never aimless and the therapist ideally has a theme or larger question in mind to connect it to.

How does it Work Online?

Online reflective therapy can work through ways of video, telephonic or chat therapy and each have their own strengths.

Video Session- the video sessions are similar to face-to-face sessions wherein the therapist and the client can see each other and pay close attention to the body language and expressions.

Telephonic Session- telephonic sessions can be close to the process of ‘client being on the couch’, wherein one does not have to face anyone and can speak out one’s mind fluidly.

Chat Session- chat sessions have their own advantage wherein both, the client and the therapist can pay close attention to the use of certain words and even the absence of a language around certain themes. It allows both to delve deeper and revisit the stated simultaneously.

Psychoanalysis is a complex practice of knitting different processes together, which can also be effectively practiced through the frame of Online therapy. The purpose, form, ideology and imagination of the therapy continues to be the same, and the online mode allows the client and the therapist to try different forms as per the changing needs and patterns of the client.

Is it right for me?

As it is commonly said, “Psychoanalysis is for people who want it, need it and can take it”. It will not provide you with a clear answer or a list of tasks, it is meant to make you come closer to yourself, so you can understand your patterns, desires, strengths and breakdowns.

If you are in pain, Psychoanalysis is for you. If you’re looking for self- discovery and growth, Psychoanalysis is for you. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, Psychoanalysis is for you.
