10 Sep 2015
Every child is an individual and children with special educational needs are as different from each other as any other children, perhaps even more so. Exams and stress related issues will differ with individual needs. With special educational needs, exams of special children have always been challenging.
What can schools and parents do to face these challenges and help special children reach their desired goals?
EVALUATION IN SCHOOLS: WAYS TO ASSESS STRUGGLING STUDENTS
· Simpler test papers,
· Lenient checking of exam papers,
· Oral exams,
· Scribes, who can write for dyslexic students,
· Extra time during exams,
· Marking for content.
· Look for small changes, in confidence, social, and communication skills.
· Compare previous IEPs (individual education plans) to evaluate relatively.
· Share small achievements with the school and child.
· Reward overall progress and not only evaluation.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND PARENTS:
DIET, REST,SUPPLEMENTS AND MEDICATIONS:
Exam stress brings with it additional requirements of proper diet and rest with special needs children. Regular medications and supplements should not be missed. Protein rich diet helps better concentration and retention. Kids with ADHD should avoid sugary and fried foods during exams. Breaks, between learning is much needed for special kids.
VISIT THE EXAM CENTER IN ADVANCE WITH YOUR CHILD:
Documents on special board provisions for exams should be ready and handy. The centre should be aware of the special arrangements.
BE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR KIDS:
Special needs kids feel reassured if their parents discuss their abilities and inabilities openly. Dinnertime can be used to exchange ideas and visualize exam process. Reasonable and achievable expectations help to motivate.
Discuss career options, their strengths and future prospects. Special kids need no comparisons, but estimate of their capabilities and a roadmap for future. They can sense healthy body language and positivity.
USE YOGA AND OTHER METHODS:
Relaxation needs are greater for special kids. Use of music, yoga, deep breathing, helps release stress and prepares them for exams. Brain gym before exams is effective for better learning, retention and recall in special kids.
MEET WITH SUCCESSFUL SPECIAL KIDS:
It is reassuring to share their fears with kids who have already given exams using provisions given by the Boards. One on one experience helps reduce stress and anxiety. Sharing success stories of special people makes kids feel secure.
