Weight Issues in Pregnancy

 Being obese or overweight during pregnancy can cause a lot of complications for the mother and the child. the more over weight the other the more complications are likely to occur. being overweight depends upon the pre pregnancybody mass index. pre pregnancy means the BMI before the mother gets pregnant. the BMI is calculated by body weight and height. 

 If the mother’s BMI is between 25-29.9 she is considered to be overweight, where in if her BMI is 30.0 or higher beforepregnancy, she is considered to be obeseObese means having excess amount of body fat. 

Causes of obesity :

1.     diet: diets high in fat, salt and sugar are directly linked to obesity.  It also depends on the size of the portion.

2.     Genetics: some of us have history of chronic illness, and obesity can be one of them.

3.     Lack of exercise: a sedentary lifestyle can lead to obesity. When you spend most the time sitting than moving.

4.     Medical abnormalities: Thyroid, blood sugar, PCOS can also cause obesity.

 

Obesity not only causes complications during pregnancy it also causes difficulty getting pregnant. being overweight orobese during pregnancy can cause the following complications:

 

High blood pressure \, Preeclampsia and Blood clotting problems. High blood pressure is when the force of the blood against the walls of the blood vessels is too high. Preeclampsia is a condition where when a woman has high blood pressure and signs that some of her organs, like her kidneys and liver may not be working properly. clotting problem are when blood clots partly and completely block the flow of blood in blood vessels. 

 

Gestational diabetes. This is a kind of diabetes that some women get during pregnancy. Diabetes is when your body has too much sugar (called glucose) in the blood. 

 

Cesarean birth (also called c-section). This is surgery in which your baby is born through a cut that your doctor makes in your belly and uterus (womb). If you’re obese, you’re more likely to have complications from a c-section, like an infection or losing too much blood.

 

,Miscarriage or still birth. 

 It can cause various infection like UTIs. 

It can also cause sleep apnea.

Obesity can lead to earlier longer or labor induction. 

 

 Obesity can not only have an effect on the pregnant mother but also on the child. The child can have neural tube defects, which can effect the brain and the spine. It can cause premature birth which in turn can cause serious health issues to the child, it can also lead to diabetes or obesity in later life. 

One can improve the chances of having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby by following few simple steps: 

 Get early and regular prenatal care. Prenatal care is medical care you get during pregnancy. take regular tests like Thyroid and blood sugar. 

Talk to your doctor about how much weight to gain during pregnancy

Eat healthy. Talk to your doctor or a nutritionist to help you plan your meals. Don’t diet. Some diets can reduce the nutrients your baby needs to grow and develop. Don’t try to stay at the same weight or lose weight during pregnancy.

Do something active every day. Talk to your doctor about activities that are safe for you to do in pregnancy
