What you should know about Anxiety Disorder

07 Apr 2016

I feel nervous as a wreck.

Am I suffering from Anxiety Disorder?

The answer could be Yes and No. You could just be anxious out of a situation and not suffering from a disorder!

What is the Difference between Anxiety &  Anxiety Disorder?

Let''s understand by an example

John has a job interview in 7 Days.

This is the kind of Job he always wanted . But it is one which is tough to get in to.

So he feels very nervous.
He is  worried about his performance.
However he is Not thinking of what all will happen if he doesn't get the job!
He is Preparing hard for it and is doing his very best.

Does John have an Anxiety Disorder. The answer is no
He is surely anxious and is feeling nervous but this hasnt impacted his thoughts. Neither has his behavior changed.  Plus its ok if someone feels nervous related to a specific situation. We all have that kind of experience from time to time

Now Let's take another example

Reema has a job interview in 7 Days

This is the kind of Job, she always wanted. But this one is tough to get in to.

She is thinking negatively about her performance
She is also thinking about what if she cannot get in to this job.
She is feeling terrible and very nervous
As a result, she is unable to prepare as good as she wanted to prepare for the interview.
This in Turn is Feeding into her anxious thought chain and debilitating her further
She in the past has had similar responses to anything that appears stressful to her

Does Reema have anxiety disorder. Absolutely Yes.

Notice how her thoughts are not just about her performance, but also have several "What If" kind of negative automatic thoughts
Notice how these thoughts have negatively impacted her action oriented behavior.

This flow of negative thoughts and the impact on behavior and the fact that she has had similar experiences is what points towards her suffering from Anxiety Disorder

If you see this pattern of thought change, impact on behavior and feeling in you then
You definitely need to take a proper Clinical assesssment for Anxiety
